A big thank you everyone who took part in the Greens EU election campaign and everyone who voted Green!
On 26 May, we watched in joy as the Green Party achieved the most fantastic EU election results. Molly Scott Cato was re-elected in the south west and across the country the number of Green MEPs more than doubled.
This was no fluke or protest vote but instead it was the result of hard work and strong, consistent policies. We didn’t have much time to organise our EU election campaign as confirmation that we were going to hold the vote only came a few weeks before election day, but here in Cornwall we swung into action as soon as we knew for sure.
We held street stalls, hand delivered thousands of leaflets, put up banners and boards across the county, phoned everyone we could to encourage them to vote and posted article after article on Facebook and Twitter.
The results were better than we could have hoped for as we achieved 18 percent of the vote, beating the Labour and Tory vote in Cornwall COMBINED!
Thank you so much to everyone who took part in the campaign (special thanks to Nigel Miles and his group in Camborne, Ian Flindall for putting up boards all across St Ives and Sarah Redfern for her organising skills and campaigning in Penryn).
Most importantly of all, thank you for voting Green! Molly Scott Cato MEP says: “It was a truly fantastic result for the Green Party in the south west, nationally and across Europe and I want to thank you personally for the part you played in making it possible. An average of 18 percent across such a diverse region as south west England and Gibraltar tells us that literally anybody might vote Green.”
